How a Halftime Fix Fueled the Sixers' 29-Point Comeback

The shot that broke the dam did not come off a dribble. Tyrese Maxey caught a LeBron James pass in transition, rose, and buried a 3-pointer. Cleveland called timeout. Maxey turned and screamed at the crowd.

Moments earlier, that same crowd had booed its own team off the floor at halftime. By the final buzzer, the boos were a roar. The Philadelphia 76ers had beaten the Cleveland Cavaliers 114-106 on Thursday night at Xfinity Arena.

The number behind it is staggering. Philadelphia trailed by 29 points and climbed all the way back. Per ESPN, it was the Sixers’ largest comeback in the play-by-play era and the Cavaliers’ largest blown lead. It was also the biggest rally of James’ 24-year career.

Blowouts like this one rarely turn on effort alone. This one turned on a whiteboard decision at the break, and on a roster that finally stopped beating itself. Here is how the systems story unfolded.

The halftime fix that flipped the floor

1. Nick Nurse changed the coverage, and the math changed with it. Nurse said his team could not handle Cleveland’s mid-pick-and-roll in the first half. The numbers back him up. According to GeniusIQ data cited by ESPN, the Cavaliers ran 27 direct picks before halftime and averaged 1.08 points on them.

After the break, Nurse shifted his defensive assignments. Cleveland ran 20 direct picks in the second half and managed only 0.56 points per possession. The same action that carved Philadelphia open suddenly produced almost nothing.

The gap between those two numbers is the game. When your defense cuts a core action nearly in half, everything downstream gets easier.

2. The possession math tells the rest. Philadelphia coughed the ball up 15 times in the first half. That matched its most turnovers in a half since January 2024. In the second half, the Sixers gave it away just twice while Cleveland lost it 15 times.

Ball security is not glamorous. It is also the quietest way a comeback gets built. Philadelphia stopped handing Cleveland free runs, and the Cavaliers stopped scoring in bunches.

Here is how the second half reshaped Cleveland’s two engines.

Mitchell had 30 points through three quarters. Nurse’s adjustments then held him to two points in the fourth, and those came with the result already decided.

The run, and the men who led it

3. The third quarter did the heavy lifting. Philadelphia opened the second half on an 8-0 run. It outscored Cleveland 37-21 in the period. Jaylen Brown, held to four first-half points, said the quarter shifted the game. It was his lowest-scoring home first half since March 2025.

Even so, the Sixers walked into the fourth still trailing by eight. A 29-point hole does not close in one quarter. It closes in layers.

4. Maxey conducted, and Embiid delivered the dagger. Maxey finished with 32 points and six assists, the top scorer on both teams. He played the role of engine and emotional lead, feeding off a building that fed him right back.

The lead change arrived at the 6:54 mark of the fourth. Joel Embiid rose over Jarrett Allen and hit a 16-foot jumper. Philadelphia did not trail again. Embiid later called the night one of the three best of his career.

There is a human read under all the numbers. Embiid said this group refused to fold in a way past Sixers teams might have. Young guard VJ Edgecombe called it the best atmosphere he has played in as a pro.

James, who set up that early Maxey triple, offered the veteran’s warning. He said the Sixers cannot lean on nights like this. “You don’t want to rely on that,” he said, laughing.

He is right, and the tape agrees. A team that trails by 29 has already made plenty of mistakes. The lesson here is not that Philadelphia can escape any hole. It is that one coaching adjustment, paired with clean possessions, can rewrite a half that looked finished.
